Tips for better networking

Posted by MemberClicks Blog

Networking is often a necessary aspect of furthering your career (some people may think of it as a "necessary evil.") So, how can you make the most of networking events and truly connect with people? We've got some awesome tips below, and feel free to add your own below!

1. Prepare questions ahead of time, such as “what are you most passionate about in your career?”. Just as you prepare for meetings ahead of time, there’s no shame in having a few items as your go-to questions.

2. Don’t stand with your arms crossed, in a corner, waiting for people to come to you. Trust me – they won’t. So smile, and, while you don’t necessarily have to throw yourself into middle of things, think about ways to look more approachable.

3. Don’t go it alone. Bring a friend who can help break the ice.

4. Brush up on current events. Referencing an article you read recently or what book you’re currently reading is a great conversation starter.

5. Wear something a little bit different than everybody else – a more colorful dress (instead of a business suit), slacks (if all the other women are wearing dresses), a whimsical tie (if you wear ties), or unusual looking eyeglasses. (From David M. Patt)

6. If you bring someone with you, don’t stand in the corner just talking to that person. It defeats the point of either of you being there. (From David M. Patt)

You’ll draw the attention of other folks who also may not enjoy and provide a very nice conversation starter.
