You’ve probably seen this symbol at various restaurants you’ve visited in your city.
That’s foursquare, a mobile app that allows you to "check in" places and share that information with your friends. Foursquare also occasionally offers discounts and promotions when someone "checks in" and you earn points for the frequency and variety of places you visit. If you check in at a place more than anyone else with the foursquare app, you're deemed the "mayor."
You’ve also probably noticed on Facebook posts and tweets that people’s locations are sometimes mentioned, or when you open your social media apps on your smart phone you get prompted to share GPS location information.
Time will tell if the obsession with sharing where you are (and knowing where your friends are) will fade, but restaurants, stores, and meeting places are capitalizing on this trend. You association can too!
Be sure you create a “check in” at your events, and maybe even meetings. For larger events, offer a small giveaway if your members or guests check in on foursquare. Be sure to encourage tagging at events on Facebook, and even generate some buzz with a twitter hash tag and if your chosen venue already has social media accounts (many popular restaurants and meeting venues do) inform them of it ahead of time so they can generate some buzz.
And don’t forget pictures! A few quality pictures can pump up social media presence.
