Give your membership a shot in the arm

Is your association lacking in participation? Membership down? Engagement lackluster? Give your membership a quick jolt in three easy steps.

Give your membership a jolt to get re-engaged!

1)   Shake things up

If you always meet in the same few spots, try picking a new restaurant or a meeting room in a different part of town. Instead of the same charity events that have been tried and true, try another agency in the area that needs some help. A break from the routine will give your members something to pay attention to and share.

2)   Ask for help

When in doubt, ask a member. Reach out for responses. Surveys sometimes work depending on the size of your membership, but your best bet is probably to just reach out to some active individuals and their immediate networks. Try having a free-form meeting and just brainstorm. Another good forum for that type of ideas-exchange leads us to our next point…

3)   Reach out digitally

If your members can’t engage traditionally, an online medium might be the way to go. Facebook groups, Google+ communities, Twitter hash tags, and LinkedIn groups are all ways to gather your members online and hold conversations. If you already have one or two, try refreshing content more regularly or at different times. You can also try separating yourself from your association profile and spurring engagement on your personal profiles.

Another thing to consider is the future of your association in engaging the next generation. Many seasoned professionals are thinking about retirement, and the millennials are on the rise.
