5 Out-of-the-Box Ways to Engage Members on Social Media

When I first joined Twitter in 2009, I was a 19-year-old concert junkie who thought it was the COOLEST thing to have a direct line to my favorite bands and their members. That summer, the Vans Warped Tour production team used the social media network to ask concert goers to volunteer for a couple of hours, in exchange for a spot on stage during the set of their choosing. Um, excuse me? 28-year-old me is still reeling over how cool that was. And without a tool like Twitter, it would’ve been nearly impossible to pull off.

Using social media as a way to engage an audience in unique and unexpected ways has been a no-brainer to me ever since. These platform’s very existence depend on interaction. And as a member-based organization, fostering a sense of community is in your roots. That will always be true, no matter how communication channels change over the years. The real-time, highly visible nature of social media is just what associations need to create meaningful and continuous member engagement.

Time Management for Small Staff Association Leaders

We know that small staff association leaders are juggling a LOT of responsibilities and tasks. On top of that, you’re probably helping your staff members and board juggle all of their responsibilities. That’s a lot of balls in the air! How about you take a minute while you read this blog and take some steps to clear out your mind and get yourself organized and ready to take on all those tasks.

Time Management for Small Staff Association Leaders

1)   Stick to a routine

Variety may be the spice of life, but it might make things complicated when you’ve got as much on your plate as you do. Establish a regular routine that’s primed for success, at least first thing in the morning. Make it part of your day to get your coffee or tea, read your E-mails, check in with social media and relevant blogs, and then write out a to-do list. (See step 2.) The rest of your day may be crazy, but you’ll probably find it comforting to have that first hour-established daily.


2)   Make a to-do list

It seems obvious and a little elementary, but writing lists is a really great way to stay on task and make sure nothing hits the ground. It really adds another layer of depth if you keep the lists all together in a notebook or on a notepad so you can see what wasn’t completed the day before and keep it on the list until it gets done!


3)   Use meeting-markers and a calendar

Depending on your E-mail host, you may have a calendar already connected and synced with your E-mail, therefore you should be able to send meeting markers that automatically block time out on your calendar. Then, if you would like, you could sync those calendars with your phone or tablet so you get reminders. Did I lose you? Sorry, that’s a lot of syncing. But the same principles apply to good old paper if that’s a little more in your comfort zone. The bottom line is to find a calendar system that works for you. Don’t forget to check in with your AMS calendar as well!


4)   Take some time off every now and then

The quickest way to derail your organization and productivity is to fry your brain. You have to take care of yourself! Work on that work/life balance, even if it means picking up that calendar and setting aside an evening JUST for family and friends. It goes a long way in helping your brain take a rest.


5)   Ask for advice

You’re never in it alone. Ask your staff, your board, or get in touch with former leaders. Also attending local SAE conferences can put you in touch with some great experts and other association executives who can give you some great ideas. There will probably even be a learning session about it!
