ASAE’s Annual Meeting & Exposition is officially in full swing, and even though it’s only day #2, we’re already having a blast - and learning so much!

The conference kicked off with an AMAZING Opening Celebration at the Royal Ontario Museum, which we’d heard was one of the most beautiful museums in the world, but boy, they weren’t kidding! Take a look at some of the fun we had below!

Then, on Sunday, Nilofer Merchant, Fellow at the Martin Prosperity Institute, kicked off the educational portion of the conference with an opening keynote titled, “The Power of Onlyness.” What is onlyness you ask? Well, according to Merchant, it’s the uniqueness that makes you you. It’s the spot that only you can stand in based on your unique history, experiences, visions, and hopes. But more than that, it’s how you use that uniqueness to connect with others - and create change.

Think about this: When someone asks you “Who are you?,” how do you respond? Likely, you say something as it relates to your profession - you’re an association executive, for example.

But when you do that, you’re limiting yourself and preventing yourself from truly connecting with others. When someone asks you “Who are you?,” try answering it as if they were asking “What inspires you?” or “What lights your fire?” See how that completely changes the conversation? You went from being an association executive to someone who’s passionate about anti-bullying (as an example). And if you say that and find someone who’s also passionate about that, you’ve then formed a deeper connection than you could have by simply stating your profession.

Something to think about, particularly as we network and try to facilitate change - and meaningfulness - in the world.

The theme of this year’s conference is “inspire,” and even though we’re only on day #2, we’re already feeling SO inspired - by the messages we’re hearing and the people we’re around.
