As we start to round the corner at the end of 2019, we’re sure “the budget” has come up once or twice (or a few hundred times) at your association or chamber.
And even if you’re not directly involved in the budgeting process, it’s a good time to talk about the things that you should be investing in for the future. Here are two key things that we think all organizations should make room for:
1. Professional development for staff
Investing in your staff and their success encourages them to continue doing good work for you - not to mention, remain loyal when opportunities to leave come around. One way to accomplish that, that’s just as much of an investment in your organization as it is them? Different professional development opportunities!
Now, that can mean something different for everyone: an industry conference, a technology user conference (or perhaps one that’s a little bit of both), help paying for their CAE credentials, leadership courses, etc. Consider setting aside a dollar amount per staff member and allowing them to choose an opportunity that best suits their needs and professional growth, within some guidelines that you provide.
2. A system to manage member education
Speaking of education, now’s a good time to invest in the way you provide, manage, and track those opportunities for members, too. Education is a cornerstone for all member-based organizations - and a main “join reason” at that. And with the technology that’s available today, there’s really no reason not to formalize some kind of online learning initiative.
Do a little research to see what systems other member organizations you admire have used to standardize their educational initiatives. Whether it’s a complete learning management system (LMS) or something else, this investment should ultimately pay for itself in non-dues revenue and increased membership retention.
