So you have a pretty solid membership referral program, huh? The problem is...few people actually take advantage of it. (Or not as many people as you would like, rather.)
To strengthen the effectiveness of your association or chamber’s membership referral program, try these two tactics:
1. Remind your members often
“Out of sight, out of mind” couldn’t be more true when it comes to a membership referral program. Members forget you have one! And not only that, but your members’ networks naturally grow over time. Maybe they didn’t have anyone to refer last year, but this year, they have a new colleague who’d be a perfect fit.
That’s why it’s so critical to remind your members...often! In addition to having information on your website about your membership referral program, consider…
- Including a blurb about it in your weekly/monthly newsletter
- Posting about it on social media
- Creating a graphic to make your messaging stand out (Try Canva - it’s free!)
- Adding it to your email signature
The more you can get that information in front of your members, the more “bites” you’re likely to see.
2. Be strategic about your timing
Timing. Is. Everything. Especially when trying to get membership referrals. In addition to just getting the word out there to all of your members using the tactics above, get strategic about who you’re targeting and when.
For example, let’s say one of your members comments on a social media post of yours saying they enjoyed an event you just held. (Or providing positive feedback of any kind.) Well, since they currently think very favorably of your organization - and you know that - why not send them a direct email (personalized!) asking if there’s anyone they knew who might benefit from a membership? By emailing them directly, rather than just mentioning it in your newsletter to ALL members, you’re much more likely to get a response. Plus, they might be flattered that you thought of them and need their help (we all like to be needed), so they might go out of their way to provide you with a contact (or several!).
