Don’t get me wrong: a learning management system (or LMS) is the ideal tool for giving you and your staff visibility into your members’ progress with any required education initiative. (Not to mention, an LMS will give your learners the best user experience, too.)
But if your organization or industry doesn’t put a big emphasis on continuing education, certifications, etc. - you may wonder whether or not an LMS would be useful to you. Well, wonder no longer! Here are a few other ways an LMS provides a ton of value to member-based organizations:
Content hosting and delivery
I would almost argue that this is THE most valuable use of an LMS for any member-based organization. No matter your industry, size, or location members join your organization to learn. Whether it’s best practices for their profession or something they want to spend more time on as a hobby, YOU have the information they are seeking - and a learning management system can easily host and distribute all of that content in one, easy-to-use place.
Pro Tip: Take an inbound marketing approach and provide this helpful content to non-members too, so they begin to see the value of membership as well. (And/or, consider charging a small fee and adding to your non-dues revenue bucket.)
The more intentional you can be when it comes to bringing new staff members on board, the better the transition will be. (And, hopefully, you’ll see less turnover.) So why not flip the script on tracking a learning initiative, and set one up for your staff? Or heck, even for onboarding new members, too! Using an LMS to onboard your stakeholders will take you from “How do we get them up to speed quickly?” to “They’ve made a huge impact in just one month!”
They need a little onboarding love, too! This may be smaller snippets of training, depending on your volunteers’ typical responsibilities. But no matter what it looks like, a guided training program for your volunteers is guaranteed to engage and retain more of them. Same goes for your board members - they are volunteers after all, and being thoughtful about how they'll be trained on board service basics, responsibilities, and limitations will ensure that the organization’s mission and values stay at the center of decision making, ultimately resulting in moving the association toward its north star.
