We love a good hack. When trying to accomplish a goal, isn’t it nice to have new tricks and tactics to try...without having to spend a ton of time brainstorming? If you’re running low on ideas (and/or time to achieve said goals), take a look at these three membership management hacks:
For social media engagement…
So you’re running out of ideas for your social media content, huh? And what you are posting, people aren’t engaging with (or at least not much). Try this hack: Play off the holidays! Social media shouldn’t be “all business.” It should be a place where, in addition to disseminating important information, you can connect with your audience on a more personal level - and holidays are a great way to do that!
Take advantage of both traditional holidays and out-of-the-box holidays (those are BIG on social media). Below are a few specific ideas so you can plan accordingly…
The first day of winter (December 21)
Idea: Take a picture of your staff bundled up and simply wish your followers a happy - and warm! - first day of winter. Below is a picture of how MemberClicks did it a few years ago:
The holiday season, in general
Idea: Regardless of what holiday you and your followers celebrate (Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, etc.), I think we can all appreciate a festive sweater...especially if it’s tacky. Encourage your staff - or even just a couple people - to wear a tacky sweater one day. Take a pic and spread the cheer! (Example below.)
New Year’s Eve/Day (December 31/January 1)
Idea: In addition to wishing your followers a happy and healthy New Year (which you absolutely should do), try having a little fun with it too. Is there a guilty pleasure you’re (semi)resolving to give up in the new year? For example, a few years ago, MemberClicks posted the following:
An easy post to duplicate that’s also a change from the norm! (And P.S. We did not end up eating less cookies…)
For new member onboarding…
Getting new members engaged early is the key to membership retention. But getting them to engage isn’t always easy. So here’s a hack: To get them to take that first, tiny step, give them something quick and easy to do. For example, if you send out a printed new member welcome packet, include a little sticker or a magnet and encourage them to take a picture either of it or with it and share it on their LinkedIn page using a certain hashtag.
Why LinkedIn? Well that’s where your members are trying to make themselves look good professionally, and being a member of your association or chamber also makes them look good professionally. (It says, “Hey, I’m committed to this industry/community and learning the latest and greatest.”) So give them something they can share to get that message across! (They’re much more likely to share it on LinkedIn than they are on their personal Facebook page or Instagram account.)
And note: Even if you send your new member welcome packets out digitally, you can still do this. Just include some kind of image your new members can download and share in the same way. (Almost like a digital badge!)
For email marketing…
We all receive hundreds of emails per day, so getting your members and prospects to read YOURS is always a challenge. To overcome that, try this hack: To grab attention (quickly!), try including a GIF of some sort. For example, if you’re offering a flash sale on your conference registration rates, you could include a GIF like this:
It’s different, it stands out, it sends a message, and it’s FUN!
And note: You can grab all the GIFs you could ever imagine for free at giphy.com.
