Celebrate Your Members on Small Business Saturday

If you’re a chamber of commerce or an association with members in the retail industry, Small Business Saturday is a big deal for your membership! They have a tough time year-round competing with retail giants. This is THEIR day to shine.

Show your support by doing a little promoting of your own. Check out these three ways to celebrate your members on Small Business Saturday:

1. Leading up to Small Business Saturday, post a few shout-outs on social media

Who doesn’t love a good shout-out? In the days (and even weeks) leading up to Small Business Saturday, pick a few members to highlight on social media. Are any of your members offering special deals that day? Twenty percent off storewide or a BOGO special of some sort? Share that information on your social media pages! (And this probably goes without saying, but don’t forget to tag the company you’re mentioning!)

Note: If you can plan ahead here, we highly recommend doing so. Reach out to a few of your members (or even stop by their store) to 1) find out if they’re offering some kind of deal and, if so, what that deal is, and 2) get a picture! (Pictures always generate more engagement on social media.)

And don’t forget to use the hashtags #ShopSmall and #SmallBusinessSaturday in your posts!

2. Put together a blog post listing all (or several) local deals/offerings

Many businesses will be promoting their own holiday specials, but they’d love it if you helped spread the word! Consider putting together a blog post just listing what types of deals local businesses are offering. (I scope lists like this out every year for both Black Friday and Small Business Saturday. I like to know who’s offering what so I know how to spend my time - and money - that day.)

Tip: If getting this type of information seems overwhelming, have your members help you! (I’m sure they’d be more than willing.) Create a form in your online social community asking your members to list their specials. Or, create a form for your members to fill out and send that form to them via email. However your members communicate best with you, go that route. Then compile the results and publish away!

3. Celebrate growth with a “then versus now” series

Small Business Saturday is all about championing small businesses. That said, have a little fun with the day. Show how far your members and local businesses have come by doing a “then versus now” series - either on social media, in your newsletter, on your blog...or on all three! If you can get a picture of what the business looked like when they first opened (maybe even what the building looked like on opening day) and then a picture of what the business/building looks like now, you can post them together - side by side- to showcase and celebrate growth! Again, this is probably something you’ll need your members to help you with (they’d need to supply you with the pictures), but we bet, since you’re advocating on their behalf, they’d be more than happy to!
