If you follow us on social media, you likely know about the conference we just held in Indianapolis - MC LIVE! (If you don’t follow us on social media, well...you should! All the links are at the bottom of this page.)

That said, at MC LIVE!, there were a number of breakout sessions covering a variety of industry-related topics: how to work with a difficult board (yeah, we’ve all been there), how to improve the member experience, how to more effectively manage your organization’s data - all that good stuff.

Nightmares You'll Avoid with an AMS

Managing any type of organization comes with its pitfalls. Enter, technology. It’s built to make your life easier and avoid those pitfalls at all costs! This Halloween season has us thinking: What nightmares could YOU avoid by using the right association management software?

Here are a few we think are worth mentioning:

#1: Awkward member interactions

This one can feel like a reoccurring nightmare for some. You show up at an event and someone approaches you like you’ve known them for years...and you just can’t place them. What’s even more awkward? When that person is a member of your association!

Association management software makes it so much easier to keep up with all of your members. Track their professional activity, member activity (benefits used, communications received, financial status, etc.), and even specific attributes (from “only wants to receive emails on Mondays” to “also a part of X organization”). Now before events (or phone calls or meetings), you can quickly look over member profiles and give yourself a refresher!

#2: Unable to answer board questions

Eeeeek! That’s a position no one wants to be in. While a database doesn’t necessarily help you answer questions off the top of your head, it does give you the confidence to say “I will find out and get right back to you” and KNOW you’ll have an answer for them shortly.

You see, the right software will house all kinds of information about your association and its members. What’s more is, many come with a number of reports that will allow you to quickly find and report on said information. (Some even allow you to build custom reports for those things that are unique to your organization!)

#3: Unsure of what strategic direction to take

This one could be haunting you right now as we head into November. The end of the year tends to make us think back over the past few months and start to make a plan for a fresh start come January. The problem is (professionally speaking) without data it can be difficult to determine the right move!

All of that information and reporting we talked about could be used to your advantage, too! With regular insight into certain aspects of your organization, you’ll always know where it’s heading. (And therefore, what you need to do in order to change direction if necessary.)

#4: Navigating a mess of financials

Financial management trouble is enough to make any association executive SCREAM. This is one area that you can’t afford to get wrong - literally!

What’s cool about association management software, is that it acts as a transactional system of record. It tracks each and every financial interaction a member has with you: So, not just dues, but also any non-dues items like donations, event registration, advertising, etc. Being able to get down to the nitty-gritty of your financials and view items on the individual level can be a lifesaver! Bonus: The right system may even have some kind of integration with your accounting software, too.

#5: Struggling to drive retention

We bet it may sometimes feel like your organization is filled with zombies with how slowly some members renew. There’s just no sense of urgency!

With association management software, you’ll be armed with the tools that’ll motivate them to take action: Share an activity report to remind them of the value they’ve gotten out of their membership so far, build email templates and schedule reminder emails to send a few times ahead of their due date, make phone calls and log the conversations in their profile so you can follow up on any relevant, and more!
