As an association professional, what exactly are you (and your staff) trying to achieve? Increased membership? A larger pool of volunteers? Greater attendance at your next meeting or event?
...all of the above?
Whether you have one primary goal or ten, tackling those goals (and the many steps needed to get there) can often be intimidating. You may feel overwhelmed with everything you have to do, and honestly, just freeze up. It’s TOO much.
But here’s a trick: What if you could designate your days (Monday - Friday) to a particular goal? For example, on Mondays, you focus on membership recruitment. Tuesdays, volunteer recruitment. Wednesdays, your upcoming annual meeting. And so on…
Now we understand that designating a WHOLE day to a particular goal may not be realistic. You probably have day-to-day tasks that may not line up exactly with one (or any) of your goals, but that still need to be completed. That’s ok. To make this concept still work for you, consider doing one thing a day that lines up with those particular goals. For example…
- If your goal is membership recruitment (and you’ve slotted that for Mondays), consider sending out an email (or even just drafting it) to all the prospects in your database. You could offer them a limited-time discount on membership or one or two free educational events if they join by a certain date.
- If your goal is volunteer recruitment (and you’ve slotted that for Tuesdays), consider writing a quick blurb for your next newsletter about the importance of volunteers and what opportunities you currently have available. Another option: Post a “call for volunteers” on your various social media channels. This doesn’t take much time, and it still contributes to your bottom line/end goal. (Every little tactic helps!)
- If your goal is greater attendance at your next meeting or event (and you’ve slotted that for Wednesdays), consider launching a quick, three-minute Facebook Live video explaining what attendees can expect at the conference and why this is an event they won’t want to miss.
Now one very important note here: Don’t think that these daily tactics have to be grand. They don’t! Little things like drafting an email or posting on social media can still have an impact - and those are the stepping stones needed to achieve those bigger goals.
And if doing one thing a day still seems like a lot to you (we get it - you’re busy!), try doing one thing a week. It’s all about having a system that you can realistically follow.
