We talk about engagement a lot - but that’s because it’s a CRUCIAL part of association management. The more engaged your members are, the more likely they are to renew. Plain and simple.
So the million dollar question then is how do you engage your members? Well, visuals are a great place to start. In fact, here are five tactics for engaging your members with visuals:
Infographics are a quick and easy way to engage your organization’s membership. They’re informational (or should be), and more importantly, scannable, meaning your members are more likely to actually read them.
Now you don’t have to be a graphic designer to create good looking infographics. In fact, there are several sites out there that will actually do the design for you - for free! All you have to do is insert the copy (and play around with colors, fonts, and placement if you want). Canva is a great design site to try!
Videos are a hot topic right now - and they likely will be for a while. In fact, it’s predicted that Facebook will be primarily video in five years or less. That said, if you want to engage your members and potential members, it might be time to give video a try.
Now don’t panic! Yes, videos can be intimidating, but they’re totally doable. See what we mean (and how to get started) in our post, Association Videos: Do This, Not That.
3. SlideShare presentations
SlideShare is less talked about than video, but can be just as engaging. What is SlideShare, you ask? Well, it’s a slide-sharing service that allows you to easily upload and share presentations, infographics, documents, videos, PDFs, and webinars. (Think PowerPoint x10.)
SlideShare is great for engagement because it allows you to easily embed pictures, videos, and hyperlinks into your presentations, making them more engaging than traditional PowerPoints. Plus, SlideShare allows you to reach an audience much larger than that of your own membership, so it’s a good recruitment tool too! (Tips for using SlideShare here.)
4. Social media images
You might be using social media to engage your organization’s members, but are you using images to take that engagement above and beyond? Posts with images and/or videos tend to get more likes and shares on all platforms than those without.
So, if you’re posting about your upcoming conference, post a picture with the event details or a picture of last year’s conference. Just something to make your post stand out. (Note: If you don’t have a picture, you can easily create one using Canva, the design site we mentioned earlier.)
5. Event signage
Too often, event signage is thought of as a basic event need rather than an opportunity to get creative. But it IS an opportunity to get creative - so seize it! Sure, you still need the basics (registration this way, parking here, etc.), but in addition to that, try doing something unique. Consider having a fun backdrop or a cutout of your event hashtag. If you have something that stands out, people will be more likely to take their picture with it - and post it!
Here’s how MemberClicks did it at our 2016 Shindig at ASAE Annual. We had an Instagram cutout made specifically for ASAE Annual, and fortunately, people used it!
