Facebook’s New Algorithm and What It Means for Your Association

Facebook is constantly changing - that’s nothing new. But its latest change, involving its news feed algorithm, could have a major impact on your association. Here’s why:

The change

In a nutshell, Facebook is changing its news feed algorithm to favor updates from family and friends. That means, exposure for company “pages” - including your association’s page - could decrease.

Why the change, you ask? Well, Facebook has always been about connecting family and friends. But in recent years, as you’ve probably noticed, company updates and news stories have somewhat taken over. Some people have complained about that, and because of that feedback, Facebook is now favoring more personal posts - posts from users’ family and friends.

What to do about it

So what’s an association to do? Well, now that exposure for company pages could decrease, it might be time to explore other platforms/marketing options. For example, online social communities. Online social communities function just like regular social media sites, but with two key differences: 1) They’re for your members’ eyes only, and 2) YOU’RE the owner.

What we’re getting at here is this: If you post something in your online social community, as long as your members log in, they will see it. There’s no news feed algorithm you have to battle - your updates will show up in the feed. (Whew!)
