Rising Member Expectations

How to Match Rising Member Expectations in 2019

We live in a highly advanced, highly personalized world. Voice assistants, same-day delivery, and on-demand content are becoming the norm. And while that’s great for us as consumers, it can be a challenge for those in the business of customer service (your association or chamber included).

Your members are expecting instant service. They’re comparing your organization to companies like Amazon and eBay. And while none of us can directly compete with retail giants like that, there are several things you can do to meet - and even exceed - rising member expectations in 2019:

So You Started an Association, Now What?

Posted by Krissy Conant

Growing a new association is no easy feat, even for an experienced association professional. You’ll have to start considering alternative ways to expand your member base as well as expose your brand to a larger (and willing!) audience.

To help get you started, take a look at these four simple tips to start developing your association today!

Try Inbound Marketing to attract new members

A phrase coined by HubSpot, Inbound Marketing draws in potential members to your website through relevant and helpful content. If you’re not sure where to start, consider this: what could potential members be looking for from your association?

Consider using specific industry topics to attract new members such as:

  • Advocacy
  • Frequently Asked Questions for Industry Newbies
  • Fundraising
  • New Technologies
  • Best Practices

Use a content calendar for social media

We know that you see this sentiment everywhere, but we really want to drive this point home. Now more than ever, professionals are turning to social media to get a glimpse of your organization’s brand and to see how you interact with your audience.

One of the best ways to keep your social media healthy and active is to consider making a content calendar (with tools like Google Sheets or Trello to track). This system allows for you to plan in advance for each month or quarter to help keep ahead of the game. In addition, it will allow you to have a quick reference to make sure you’re not focusing too heavy on one theme.

Get referrals from current members

No matter if your organization is brand new or a century old, gaining new members via existing member referrals is one of your best bets for strategically growing your member base. Why? If you think about your prospective members on a scale with one side being a cold lead (uninterested) to another side being a hot lead (very interested), a member referral would be red hot as most people like to participate when they have a strong recommendation.

If you’re not sure where to start, go ahead and check out our post about what to consider when creating a member referral program for your association.

Gather member feedback via surveys

Surveys may seem old hat, but they are tried and true for good for reason. The truth is that people (when they are invested) generally like to give feedback, but only if they know it’s going to be evaluated and not discarded. So take this opportunity to check the temperature of your current members and see where you are succeeding and where you can improve.

This feedback can help provide perspective on what attracts prospective members to your association and what may turn them away. Check out our post on survey feedback here to learn more.

As an association professional, you’ve got your hands full. You’re balancing member applications, events, emails, dues renewals, your website, and membership reports - among many other things. If you’re looking for a helping hand, you may want to consider trying out an association management system (AMS). Check out our guide on why you need an AMS to make your life easier today!
