Two Important Website Edits That Increase Online Member Engagement

You know that old expression, “you never get a second chance to make a first impression?” Well, that couldn’t be more true of association web design.

When it comes to designing your organization’s website, we highly recommend you make these two important edits:

Make your site responsive

According to ComScore.com, in 2015, the number of mobile users worldwide surpassed desktop users by approximately 200 million people. Because of that shift, in April 2015, Google released a new algorithm for searching from a mobile device. The new algorithm promotes mobile-friendly websites when users are searching from a mobile device and buries non mobile-friendly sites below those results. Yikes! 

So what’s an association to do? Well first and foremost, you must make your site responsive. The easiest way to do this is by switching your existing website to a responsive design. This will help your website show up in mobile searches and allow your members to easily interact with your site via phones and tablets. Even better, it prevents you from having to design multiple websites to support various devices. (Insert sigh of relief here.)

Utilize widgets

Website widgets are another great way to boost online member engagement by offering a richer website experience. What the heck is a widget, you ask? Well, they’re those little doo-dads you see on websites, often in the sidebar, that perform one or two simple functions.

Some common examples of engaging website widgets include:

  • Twitter widgets – Twitter widgets usually display 3 – 5 of your organization’s most recent tweets along with a link to your Twitter profile so that people can easily follow you.
  • Calendar widgets – Calendar widgets come in many forms, but they typically display your organization’s upcoming meetings and events.
  • Search widgets – Search widgets are a great way to add a search field to your organization’s website. And remember, the easier people can find information on your website, the more engaging it will be.
